Dear Friends,

We would like to share some good news, some sad news and an important announcement with you.

Good News:

The Bible Baptist Church of La Reina, Santiago held it’s annual family camp in January. The theme was, “Small Things doing Big Works”, based on Proverbs 6:6-11. In the two weeks since camp, our folks, especially the youth group, have been showing some real enthusiasm for God’s work. Just this past Sunday one dear lady brought a visitor who made a profession of faith at the end of the services.

Sad News:

Last Monday Dave took a few hours off to ride his bike up a nearby mountain. On his way back down the hill he rounded a curve and hit a patch of water flowing across the road. He fell, along with three other bike riders, and fractured his right shoulder blade. The fracture is large and jagged, but thanks to the Lord he will probably not need surgery. He was able to come home from the hospital the same day with his arm and shoulder immobilized. He will have to remain in this mummified position for a month and then will have to get further x-rays and see the doctor again.

This is difficult for him, as he cannot write or drive or do many basic functions. But he keeps busy studying and working from home for now. There’s always something to do!

One bright spot in this picture is that last Sunday Dave was able to lead our apartment building attendant to the Lord. What a blessing!

Important Announcement:

We are planning a short furlough this year, beginning in August and returning sometime in January of 2013. Please advise us if you would like a visit from the Disneys.

Our main goal is to try to raise monthly support. In 2011 three supporting churches were forced to drop several of their missionary families, including the Disneys, and other churches had to decrease their monthly support to their missionaries.

The cost of living in Chile has increased, and is now at 112 percent compared with the cost of living in the United States. The decreasing value of the dollar also makes it more difficult to make ends meet these days!

There are many new missions springing up here (grandchildren!), and many of the new young pastors and workers have been asking us to spend more time with them, teaching, preaching and counseling. Please pray that the Lord will provide the funds that we need to enable us to continue to minister here in Chile.

MERRY CHRISTMAS FROM CHILE

December, 2011

Dear Friends,

We just can’t believe that 2011 is almost over! It has been an amazing year. Please let us share just a few recent blessings with you.

Pastor and Mrs. Jim Carroll from the Lighthouse Baptist Church in Colorado Springs, Colorado came to visit us for a couple of weeks. We kept them pretty busy preaching and speaking in churches, missions and retreats throughout the country. We also spent some time visiting with Pastor Juan Quilodran about the upcoming construction on the church in Talca. It was a great blessing to spend this time with this dear Pastor and his wife, Sally (Dave’s sister).

Then, during the month of November we were praying and working in our church here in Santiago for a three-day evangelistic campaign. Throughout the years, Peggy and I have noticed that whenever a church makes a concentrated effort to pray, visit and prepare for a soul-winning campaign, souls are saved – before, during and after the actual meetings. For example:

Two weeks before the campaign three boys were saved in Sunday School.

The week before the campaign a young married lady received the Lord. We had been praying for her for a very long time.

During the campaign six children and a ninety-one year old grandmother made professions of faith!

The week after the campaign a teenage boy was saved in our Saturday evening youth meeting.

Last week a little boy received Jesus as his Savior, and three other children are preparing to be baptized this coming Sunday morning.

May this never end! Glory to God in the Highest!

Finally, our national pastors have been communicating some wonderful blessings in their own churches, and they have a vision to spread the Word into many new small towns in Chile. Please pray for this outreach ministry.

We pray that your holiday season is full of blessings. You have certainly blessed our hearts throughout the years.

Dear Friends and Partners in Prayer,

This month we would like to share an answer to prayer, as we are in the ministry of reaching souls together for Christ.

Miguel, a young business man here in Santiago, has been coming to our church for the past five months. When he first came, he was as many people are when they, as their last resort, turn to God – carrying a burden and many challenges in his business, home, family and marriage.

That Wednesday night Miguel received Christ as His personal Savior and started coming to church every service. He began praying for his wife and family. He participated in one of our prayer circles with the men of our church as they prayed for other men and their families.

His wife and two children would come from time to time, but were always unresponsive to the gospel invitation. Miguel was so burdened about them and their eternal destiny. He continued coming to every service, learning to be a Christian example to his family and a faithful child of God. The family began to come more often as they saw changes taking place in Miguel’s life.

Last Sunday night, Miguel came to me and said, “Pastor, my wife is ready. Could you please talk to her about the Savior tonight?” After services, Peggy and I spoke to Berta about God’s saving grace. We explained that the same Lord and Savior who had saved her husband and had changed his life could become her Savior. We asked if she would like to receive Him into her heart. Praise God, Berta prayed the sinners prayer of faith and repentance and gloriously received Christ as her personal Savior. Afterward she shared with us that a huge burden had just been lifted from her heart. She had left it at the cross.

While we were gone all last week in meetings down south, we received a large fruit basket from Miguel and Berta in gratitude for leading them to their newfound faith in Christ. Pray for this family as we continue to see them grow in the Lord and as we see the Holy Spirit working in the lives of their two young people too.

Lord bless as we continue to serve together,

Dave and Peggy

Dear Friends,

Peggy and I first became acquainted with the neighborhood of Chiguayante in 1985 when we moved to Concepcion to start our first mission. We met a man named Osvaldo, and he invited us to his home to hold Bible studies. As sometimes happens, that family eventually lost interest in the study and chose not to participate in our newly formed mission. The mission went on to become the Bible Baptist Church of Hualpen, which is now being pastored by Leonel Espinoza.

Gastón and Claudia have practically grown up in the Bible Baptist Church of Hualpen. They married and had two beautiful children. Gaston has served in the Chilean Navy, and both he and Claudia became very involved in the church.

In 2008, the church decided to begin an outreach effort to Chiguayante. A small group visited the area and began a Bible study in a home there. Over the past two and a half years the study has grown into a mission, and Gaston and Claudia Dueñas are leading the work for now. The congregation is meeting in a Community Center called “Valle del Sol”, or the “Valley of the Sun”.

In a couple of weeks we will be preaching in a conference at the Bible Baptist Church of Hualpen, and we will have the opportunity to preach to the folks of the Bible Baptist Mission in Chiguayante. We are thrilled to be participating, after so many years, in the evangelization of this town. Please pray for this mission.

Dear Friends,

Last week Peggy and I travelled to a small town close to the city of Talca to meet with six Chilean Pastors and their wives for a three-day “Marriage in the Ministry” retreat.

These couples represent the cities of Santiago, Viña del Mar, El Bosque, Chillán, Talca, Constitución, and Monte Aguila. Their ministry experience varies between two and thirty years (the Disneys celebrated thirty years as missionaries on May 19th), and each family has some amazing stories to tell of how the Lord has blessed over the years in each mission and church.

Peggy and I were honored to be able to share with these friends and colleagues out of the Word of God, and our fellowship together was a real blessing.

We returned to Santiago for Sunday services. On Sunday evening a young couple visited our services. Alvaro and Paola live close by, and at the close of the message we were so happy to be able to lead Alvaro in a profession of faith in Jesus Christ. Paola confirmed to us that she had been saved many years ago.

Please pray for this young couple’s spiritual growth in the days to come. And please continue to pray for all of the national pastors and workers throughout Chile.

Dear Friends, it is a joy to report some items of interest to you this month.

First, we were blessed at our annual pastor’s camp with the participation of 147 folks from 19 different churches. We learned a great deal from the lessons out of the book of Jude taught by Pastor Bill Smith.

Then, just this week we completed Phase 2 of our three-part “Earthquake Relief” project here in Chile. Here is an overview of this project, which began after the 8.8 Earthquake of 2/27/10:

Phase 1 included all of the rescue and relief efforts in the first weeks after the earthquake. This was accomplished in cooperation with the fellowship of churches in Chile and Argentina. This phase, with your help, also included repairs to our apartment.

Phase 2 was a 13-month long project called “Pastoral Support”, in which the churches here in Chile made deposits directly into our missionary fellowship account to help subsidize the salaries of our three most affected national pastors:

Pastor Gary’s home was badly damaged, and several of his members there in Constitución lost jobs or homes to the quake.

Pastor Marcelo, in Loncoche, had to move his church to a new place, as their rented building was damaged beyond repair.

Pastor Juan and his family in Talca lost their home and the church, and they suffered the losses soon afterward of their unborn baby and of Pastor Juan’s sister and his wife’s father. They also had to sell their car and a small family business.

Over the past 13 months we received deposits to our fellowship account from 19 different churches located from the northern city of Iquique, to the southern Island of Chiloé. We also received donations from a church in Spain. These donations came to a total of $4.494.000 pesos, valued at $9,362.50 dollars, which was divided equally to each of the 3 pastors. Additional offerings were given by others directly to these pastors, and some who were unable to give money helped with other needs, like cleanup work, or with food, clothing, water, and medical needs, teaching and preaching and with lots of hugs. Many gave anonymous gifts. Only the Lord knows all that was done. And our Chilean fellowship of churches is stronger as a result. Glory to God!

Phase 3 of this effort was mentioned in our last prayer letter. It involves using funds received from around the world to build the new church in Talca. Construction has been delayed, but we are still working toward breaking ground soon. We ask you to please continue to pray for this need.

Thank you for all that you have done, in prayers, through special gifts, and through your faithful support, to help in this ministry. May God bless each one of you.

Your missionaries to Chile

Dear Friends,

Our summer is just flying by!

A few weeks ago we finished up our family camp for this year. A young man, Samuel, who received the Lord as his Savior in our December campaign attended camp, and for a couple of days his parents came to see what it was all about. They almost didn’t come, because Samuel’s mother, Isabel, had been ill and wasn’t sure she was up to the trip. But they were there, and Isabel enjoyed visiting with several of our ladies.

Our ladies are wonderful about giving the plan of salvation to those who visit, and it seems that one conversation in particular led Isabel to understand that she was lacking the most important thing in her life – eternal life through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Shortly after that conversation, she sat down with two different ladies to talk. She didn’t realize that she was with our two most ardent soul-winners of the ladies’ group. But the Lord knew and had all of the pieces in place! Within a few minutes Isabel bowed her head and made a profession of faith in Christ.

So now two members of this dear family have been saved. We are now praying that the father, Eduardo, will soon receive Jesus Christ.

Our annual Pastor’s Camp with Dr. W.L. Smith begins on February 28th. There are already more than one hundred folks signed up, pastors and workers and their families. Please pray that this will be a time of spiritual and physical refreshment for these servants of God.

Finally, we continue to ask for prayer for the rebuilding of the church in Talca, which was destroyed, along with the Pastor’s home, in the earthquake last February 27th. With so much destruction in that city, the paperwork has been a nightmare. We received word several days ago that the documents were to be ready within days and that the actual construction could begin as soon as next month. What a joy! The folks of the Bible Baptist Church of Talca have suffered and waited a full year for this moment. Once again, we want to thank those of you who gave through the Chile Relief Fund to help all of the Pastors and churches that were damaged. With the beginning of this construction, we will be applying most of the remainder of the monies that were entrusted to our care for this new work.

May the Lord richly bless each one of you.

Dear Friends,

Last month one of our elderly members, Carlos, went home to be with the Lord. He had prayed for years for the salvation of his dear wife, Carmen. Just one week before his home-going, Peggy and I were visiting with them, and Carmen accepted the greatest gift in the world! She received Jesus Christ as her personal Savior.

Two weeks ago we held a three-day evangelistic campaign at the Bible Baptist Church of La Reina, Santiago.

Friday night was our couple’s evening, and two visitors made professions of faith.

Saturday night was youth night, and four young people received the Lord as their Savior.

Sunday School was a combined service for the children, and one young girl was saved.

The morning service was very special. Some members did a short play, and then Pastor Hugo preached a tremendous message. A visiting lady accepted Christ when the invitation was extended.

This coming Sunday we are holding our next baptismal service. It is a great gift to our church to celebrate the arrival of new members and to help them grow in the Lord!

WE ARE SO THANKFUL for God’s many precious gifts throughout the years. You, dear Friends, are indeed gifts from our Lord, and we appreciate you more than you’ll ever know. May this Christmas and New Year be times of great blessing for you and yours.

Dear Friends,

This is a very special year in Chile. The Bicentennial Celebration took place on September 18th. It commemorated the beginning of the Independence process in Chile, with the first Government Junta on September 18, 1810. Eight years later, Chile became a free and independent country.

The logotype (seen in the above-left section of our letterhead this month) was created to represent, in an abstract form, Latin American countries, and “happiness, celebrations and optimism.”

At the same time the attention of the Chilean people, as well as that of people around the world, has been riveted on the fate of 33 miners who have been trapped since August 5th in the collapsed San Jose mine, located near the northern city of Copiapo.

The miners, who are trapped nearly half a mile under the surface, are waiting as three distinct rescue efforts are underway to release them from their dark prison. Just this week, an announcement was made that the men may be freed as early as the 22nd of this month. We continue to pray for these men, some of whom are Christians.

On the 17th of this month we will be holding a baptismal service for seven new believers in Jesus Christ. These are folks of all ages and backgrounds. They were once imprisoned in their sin and in great need of rescue. Salvation in our Lord has now given them independence from their prison. They are now celebrating a new life of happiness and optimism in eternal life!

Thank you for your prayers, support and encouragement. You are a blessing!
